Privacy Policy

This policy describes the information collected during a visit, why it is used, and the limited circumstances in which another party may receive it. Continued use of Cumberland County Criminal History means accepting these practices.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or place entered in a search box is sent to the outside provider that operates that tool. The provider processes the request and returns its result. Cumberland County Criminal History does not keep or log those search terms on its own systems.

Messages and Contact Submissions

An email sent to us may be retained long enough to answer and manage the exchange. It is not shared outside the organization unless disclosure is required by law.

Data We Gather Automatically

Ordinary server and analytics logs can collect technical details when a page loads, including:

  • Visit and page-view timestamps
  • Device type and operating system
  • IP address
  • Browser name and version
  • Pages viewed and time spent
  • A referring website, when one is supplied

Cookies and Analytics

Cookies are small files placed on a device. They and analytics services help measure traffic, popular pages, and where visits end. A browser can block cookies, although doing so may change how some site features work.

What We Do With This Data

Collected technical data supports routine operation. It may be used for the following purposes:

  • Routing a search to the selected partner service
  • Maintaining reliable and responsive pages
  • Finding and repairing technical problems
  • Measuring which content visitors use
  • Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests

No Criminal-Record Data on File

Cumberland County Criminal History does not maintain, compile, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general routing information for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, Cumberland courts, Piedmont Regional Jail, the Virginia Department of State Police repository, and the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. Visitor information is not turned into a consumer report or a third-party criminal-history file. This site is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Third-Party Search Partners

Outside companies operate the search boxes. Data entered there is governed by the selected provider's privacy policy rather than this one. Each provider sets its own retention and disclosure practices. Review those terms before submitting a query.

Links to Other Websites

Links may lead to Cumberland County offices, Virginia courts and agencies, legal resources, or outside search services. Once a visitor leaves this site, the destination's privacy policy controls. Read it before sending personal data.

Advertising providers may use their own technology to follow activity across sites and select ads. That processing takes place on their systems.

Who Might See Your Data

Personal data is not sold. Limited information may be handled by:

  • Analytics providers that measure site use and performance
  • Search partners that process a submitted query
  • Advertising networks serving material on these pages
  • A government or law-enforcement body acting under a valid legal order

How We Protect Your Data

Standard safeguards are used for information under our control. No internet system can be guaranteed secure, however, and this policy does not promise that a breach is impossible.

Users Under 18

The service is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. Data known to have come from a minor will be deleted.

Your Data Rights

Applicable privacy and consumer-protection law may grant added rights. Public-body access in Virginia is governed separately by the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, while Virginia Code ยง 19.2-389 limits criminal-history dissemination. Subject to applicable law and exceptions, a person may:

  • Request a copy of personal information held about them
  • Ask that incorrect personal data be fixed
  • Seek deletion of covered data
  • Opt out of covered forms of processing

Updates to This Policy

A revised policy may be posted here as practices change. The effective date will be updated when a new version is published.
